One of the more elaborate mechanical designs from the original Links of London years, this Vintage Links of London Jack in the Box Charm is crafted in sterling silver as a miniature working toy box.
The square box is fitted with a hinged lid, a latch-style clasp and a spring-loaded Jack figure inside. When the clasp is released and the lid opened, the figure pops upright from the box with raised arms, revealing a red enamel cap and the mirror fitted to the inside of the lid.
The exterior also carries the familiar winding-handle detail associated with a traditional Jack in the Box, completing the miniature toy design.
At 17mm high when closed and 26mm high when open, this is a substantial Links of London charm with enough size and presence to work equally well as a small pendant or as a larger occasional-wear hero charm.
This example is hallmarked LL, 925 with a date letter for 2007.
The appeal of this charm lies in the mechanism as much as the subject.
With the box closed, it appears as a compact sterling silver cube. Releasing the front clasp allows the hinged lid to open and the spring-loaded figure inside to pop upright, recreating the surprise action of a traditional Jack in the Box.
The movement makes the charm far more interactive than a conventional solid miniature and places it among the more ambitious object designs in the Links of London archive.
The inside of the lid is fitted with a small mirror, so the figure is reflected when the box is open.
The red enamel cap provides the strongest colour accent in the piece and gives the small character greater definition against the polished silver construction.
At 17mm high when closed and 26mm when open, this is larger and more substantial than many standard Links of London charms.
It can be worn on a suitable necklace as a small novelty pendant, or attached to a Sweetie bracelet using the supplied split ring. Because of its size and mechanical construction, it is particularly well suited to occasional wear rather than being treated as a lightweight everyday charm.
The charm has been professionally cleaned and polished and is in good vintage condition overall.
Light marks and signs of age remain visible, consistent with previous use and the complexity of its moving surfaces. These do not detract from the character of the piece and are appropriate for an original mechanical charm from 2007.
