An unusual original Links of London Sterling Silver Russian Matryoshka Nesting Doll Set, comprising three individually crafted miniature silver dolls designed to fit inside one another in the traditional Russian nesting-doll manner.
Each doll is formed in sterling silver with a highly polished exterior and finely engraved decoration depicting a stylised Matryoshka figure surrounded by floral and ornamental detailing. The engraved lines create a striking contrast against the reflective silver surfaces, giving each miniature figure its own character.
The three dolls measure approximately 36mm, 26mm and 18mm high and have a combined weight of 54g.
Matryoshka dolls, also known as Russian nesting dolls, are traditionally made as a series of progressively smaller figures that fit inside one another. First developed in Russia towards the end of the nineteenth century, they became internationally recognised as decorative objects associated with Russian craftsmanship and folk art.
This Links of London interpretation translates the familiar nesting-doll form into precious metal, replacing the traditional painted wooden surfaces with polished sterling silver and engraved decoration.
The design retains the characteristic rounded silhouette, stylised facial features, decorative clothing and floral ornamentation associated with traditional Matryoshka dolls, while adopting the refined scale and finish of a miniature silver collectible.
The set comprises three graduated dolls, each designed to nest within the next largest figure.
The largest and middle dolls separate around their bodies, revealing hollow interiors that accommodate the smaller figures. The smallest doll completes the nesting sequence.
All three dolls fit together correctly, and the opening sections close securely. The complete set can be displayed as three individual figures or assembled into a single nesting doll.
The construction is an important feature of the design, distinguishing the set from decorative silver miniatures that reproduce the appearance of nesting dolls without incorporating their traditional function.
Each doll features a stylised female figure with expressive facial details, engraved hair and decorative clothing. Floral motifs extend around the lower body, with additional ornamental details appearing towards the top of the figures.
The polished silver surfaces reflect light around the engraved designs, while the darker detailing emphasises the individual figures and their decorative patterns.
Although the three dolls share the same design language, their graduated sizes create a distinctive miniature collection when displayed together.
Links of London is particularly associated with sterling silver jewellery, charm bracelets and cufflinks, but its historic collections also included decorative objects, gifts and small pieces of silverware.
These Russian Matryoshka nesting dolls represent a less familiar aspect of that design history, combining a recognisable traditional object with the polished sterling silver aesthetic associated with Links of London.
The set is particularly interesting as a collectible object because it brings together three areas of interest: historic Links of London design, miniature sterling silver craftsmanship and the wider collecting tradition surrounding Russian nesting dolls.
All three dolls are individually hallmarked with the LL sponsor’s mark, the 925 sterling silver fineness mark and a date letter corresponding to 2007.
The individual hallmarks provide evidence of the silver standard and dating of the three components, establishing the set as an original example from the historic Links of London collection.
Other examples of this design have been identified with hallmarks from 2006, indicating that the design was produced across more than one hallmark year.
The three dolls are in good vintage condition and have been professionally cleaned and polished to restore the brightness of their sterling silver surfaces.
There are minor marks consistent with age and previous handling. The engraved decoration remains clearly visible, and the three dolls retain their intended nesting functionality.
All components fit together and close correctly.
Supplied with a vintage Links London round presentation box. The box is an original Links London branded presentation item, although its original association with this particular set has not been established.
An unusual example of Links of London’s historic sterling silver giftware, combining the traditional Russian Matryoshka form with miniature silver construction and decorative engraving. A distinctive addition to a collection of Links of London objects, miniature silverware or Russian nesting dolls.
